Network for Mediterranean Studies

Outreach

The Utrecht University Mediterranean Studies Network functions as a structured interface between academic experts and societal partners. It consolidates and coordinates Mediterranean-related knowledge within the University and makes this expertise accessible to external stakeholders through media engagement and societal and cultural partnerships.

Media Interface and Public Expertise

The Mediterranean occupies a central place in contemporary debates on migration, climate vulnerability, geopolitical conflict, heritage politics, and democratic governance. Public discourse on these topics often requires historically grounded, interdisciplinary analysis.

The Network therefore serves as a central point of contact for journalists and media organisations seeking reliable expertise on Mediterranean developments. By maintaining a visible directory of experts and facilitating rapid responses to current events, the Network enhances the accessibility and public relevance of Utrecht University research. In addition, it promotes public-facing activities such as opinion pieces, expert commentary, public lectures, and podcasts.

Through this structured engagement, the Network contributes to informed public debate while strengthening Utrecht University’s profile as a source of authoritative knowledge on Mediterranean affairs.

Societal Partnerships and Knowledge Brokerage

Beyond media engagement, the Network operates as an intermediary between researchers, societal actors, and cultural institutions. It facilitates collaboration with heritage institutions, museums, archives, educational bodies, policy organisations, NGOs, and think tanks working on Mediterranean-related themes.

This brokerage role enables:

  • Joint research initiatives and policy-relevant projects
  • Advisory roles and expert consultations
  • Collaborative grant applications
  • Educational outreach and training activities via UU’s extensive network of primary and secondary schools
  • Public programming and exhibition partnerships

By coordinating these interactions, the Network enables engagement with cultural partners to preserve existing and co-create new knowledge of the Mediterranean. In collaborating with societal partners, the Network ensures that Mediterranean research at Utrecht University contributes meaningfully to possible reponses to societal challenges, including migration governance, cultural heritage preservation, environmental sustainability, and institutional resilience.

International Academic Visibility and Collaboration

Mediterranean research is inherently transnational. The Network therefore enhances Utrecht University’s international visibility by consolidating expertise under a recognisable institutional profile.

This includes:

  • Strengthening partnerships with Mediterranean-based research institutes and universities (such as the journal Mediterranean Studies)
  • Facilitating participation in European and international funding schemes
  • Supporting visiting scholars and research exchanges
  • Coordinating thematic workshops and conferences
  • Developing joint publications and collaborative research clusters

By presenting a coherent and outward-facing research community, the Network increases the competitiveness of Utrecht-based scholars in international consortia and funding programmes, and reinforces Utrecht University’s position within global Mediterranean studies.
